Embracing the diversity of languages
The roots of International Mother Language Day go back to the noble initiative of Bangladesh. In Bangladesh, 21 February has special significance as it recognizes the day in 1952 when the Bengalis, then part of East Bengal (now Bangladesh), bravely fought for recognition of their Bengali language. This movement symbolized unwavering commitment to linguistic rights and cultural identity. Today, this day is celebrated not only in Bangladesh but also by Indian Bengalis in various states and territories such as West Bengal, Assam, Jharkhand, Tripura and the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Since its inception, International Mother Language Day has been celebrated worldwide, starting on February 21, 2000. UNESCO annually selects a theme for the event and sponsors related events at its headquarters in Paris. In addition, in 2008, the International Year of Languages began on International Mother Language Day, highlighting the importance of linguistic diversity.
This day serves as a thoughtful reminder of the rich tapestry of languages that contribute to the cultural heritage of humanity. It is a time to honor and appreciate each language and recognize its unique meaning and importance. From Chile to Russia, from the Philippines to Egypt, and from Canada to countless other countries, people come together to celebrate the beauty of their mother tongues.
In the spirit of International Mother Language Day, let us embrace and celebrate our own languages with pride. Every language embodies a treasure of knowledge, traditions and stories that deserve to be recognised and preserved. By celebrating linguistic diversity, we promote mutual understanding, respect and unity among people around the world.
As we mark International Mother Language Day, let us renew our commitment to promoting multilingualism and preserving the linguistic heritage of our communities. Together, let us celebrate the richness of our languages and cultures, because every language is special and deserves to be celebrated.
Happy International Mother Language Day!
